The Summer Program is for 5 weeks, 4 days per week for a total of 20 instructional days as follows:
Week 1: Tues-Fri, June 20-23
Week 2: Mon-Thurs, June 26-29
Week 3: Mon, Wed-Fri; July 3, 5-7
Week 4: Mon-Thurs, July 10-13

Barrett Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
The front of the school is designated for school buses ONLY.
TK/Kinder/1st/ESY/Daycare buses go in the small circular driveway at the last entrance (closest to the Y)
Drop off/Pick-Up for 2nd-8th grade is on Juan Hernandez Drive in the loop.

If you are walking your child to class, park on the street (large parking lot is for STAFF ONLY)

6th Grade Summer Connection
We are excited to offer a 6th Grade Summer Connection at Britton Middle School, Martin Murphy Middle School, San Martin Gwinn and Jackson Academy of Math and Music.
Program at a Glance:

9th Grade Summer Connection
Silicon Valley Tech Academy Summer Session
2023 Silicon Valley Tech Academy Summer Session
MHUSD will again be offering currently enrolled students entering 6th, 7th & 8th grades next year the opportunity to participate in The Silicon Valley Tech Academy (SVTA) summer program. SVTA is a non-profit educational initiative in San Jose whose mission is to enable middle school students to explore and improve their skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).
Location: Central High School
Lunch & After School Program: A free lunch will be available for all students. After school care will be provided by the YMCA at no cost from 12:30pm - 5:00pm for interested families on a first come, first serve basis. No transportation will be available from home to summer school this year.

Tech 1 (Limited to 20 students per class)

Tech 2 (New Offering)

Tech 3 (New Offering) - Prerequisite: Tech 1 completed prior to taking Tech 3

Course Offerings:
Tech 1, High Tech & Space, Water & Energy: (Open to incoming 6th, 7th and 8th graders who did not participate in the Tech 1 session last summer)
Theme areas reflect both current and expected future changes in technology – Space / High Technology, Water, and Energy. Both Water and Energy segments focus attention on the environment, including sustainability and conservation. Projects will include:

High Technology & Space: Build a Mars (egg) Lander, Deconstruct a Cell Phone, Build a Simple E-Device (soldering)

Water: Design & Build an Aqueduct, Design & Build a Bridge, Build a Load-carrying Boat

Energy – Renewable Resources: Design & Build a Solar Cooker, Build a Basic Electric Motor, Build & Race a Solar Model Car
Tech 2 - Not offered this year due to staff shortages
Tech 3, Python Machine Learning & Quantum Computing, 3D Design & Printing & Robotics: San Jose State University (SJSU) College of Engineering.

Incoming 7th & 8th graders who participated in the Tech 1 class last summer may register for any of the 3 classes offered.

Incoming 7th & 8th grade students who complete Tech 1 during the first session this summer (June 20-July 5, 2023) may register for the Robotics or Python - Machine Learning & Quantum Computing classes.

Students must have a strong working knowledge of mathematical concepts.

Students may choose to register for 1, 2 or all 3 classes

Every effort will be made to ensure that each interested student is able to attend at least one of the offered sessions. Enrollment will be limited. A lottery will be used to fill classes if there are more students interested in the courses than there are spaces available.

Students must be able to attend all days of their selected class(es)

All classes will be held at SJSU with transportation to SJSU provided at no cost. Students will meet at Central High School each morning, grab a bag lunch and then board a bus to SJSU.

Students will be supervised by district personnel while on the bus and at SJSU.

Students will be returned to Central High School after each session. No district transportation home will be available for SVTA students after returning to Central High School but there will be a YMCA after school program available until 5:00 pm on a first come, first served basis.
Note: Students who enroll in Tech 3 without having taken Tech 1 last summer or during the first session this summer will not be allowed to enroll in Tech 3.

Academia Tecnológica de Silicon Valley 2023
MHUSD nuevamente ofrecerá a los estudiantes actualmente inscritos que ingresan a los grados 6, 7 y 8° el próximo año la oportunidad de participar en el programa de verano de la Academia Tecnológica de Silicon Valley (SVTA por sus cifras en inglés). SVTA es una iniciativa educativa sin fines de lucro en San José cuya misión es permitir que los estudiantes de secundaria exploren y mejoren sus habilidades en STEM (Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas).
Ubicación: Central High School
Programa de Almuerzo y Después de la Escuela: Habrá un almuerzo gratis disponible para todos los estudiantes. YMCA proporcionará cuidado después de la escuela sin costo alguno de 12:30 p. m. a 5:00 p. m. para las familias interesadas por orden de llegada. No habrá transporte disponible desde casa a la escuela de verano este año.

Ofertas de cursos:
Tech 1, High Tech & Space, Water & Energy: (Abierto para los estudiantes de 6, 7 y 8° grado que no participaron en la sesión de Tech 1 el verano pasado)
Las áreas temáticas reflejan los cambios actuales y futuros esperados en tecnología: espacio/alta tecnología, agua y energía. Los segmentos de agua y energía centran la atención en el medio ambiente, incluidas la sostenibilidad y la conservación. Los proyectos incluirán:

Alta Tecnología y Espacio: Construir un módulo de aterrizaje (huevo) en Marte, deconstruir un teléfono celular, construir un dispositivo electrónico simple (soldadura)

Agua: diseñar y construir un acueducto, diseñar y construir un puente, construir un barco de carga

Energía: recursos renovables: diseñar y construir una cocina solar, construir un motor eléctrico básico, construir y competir con un modelo de automóvil solar
Tech 2: no se ofrece este año debido a la escasez de personal
Tech 3, Python Machine Learning y Quantum Computing, 3D Design & Printing & Robotics: Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad Estatal de San José (SJSU).

Los estudiantes que ingresan a los grados 7 y 8 que participaron en la clase Tech 1 el verano pasado pueden inscribirse en cualquiera de las 3 clases que se ofrecen.

Estudiantes entrantes de 7.º y 8.º grado que completan Tech 1que completen Tech 1 durante la primera sesión de este verano (del 20 de junio al 5 de julio de 2023) pueden inscribirse en las clases de Robótica o Python: aprendizaje automático y computación cuántica.

Los estudiantes deben tener un sólido conocimiento práctico de los conceptos matemáticos.

Los estudiantes pueden optar por registrarse para 1, 2 o las 3 clases

Se hará todo lo posible para garantizar que cada estudiante interesado pueda asistir al menos a una de las sesiones ofrecidas. La inscripción será limitada. Se usará una lotería para llenar las clases si hay más estudiantes interesados en los cursos que espacios disponibles.
