Our Enrollment Department will inform you by email if you have been enrolled into your designated school according to our map. In certain cases, your school may be at capacity and you will be offered another school within the Morgan Hill Unified School District.

Transfer applications are now closed for the 2026-27 school year.

Submission of an application does not guarantee admission. Impacted sites/grade levels may have limited capacity, and transfers may not be granted, or, if granted, may not take effect until after the school year begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can my child attend a school other than their school of residence?
A: To request a transfer to a school other than your school of residence for the 2026-2027 school year, you can complete a transfer request online beginning on January 5, 2026. Q: If my transfer is approved will transportation be provided to my child?
A: No, MHUSD does not provide transportation outside of a school’s established attendance area.

Q: What is Scribbles?
A: We partner with Scribbles, a software platform that assists in fostering a more equitable and easy access to our transfer process, while being more transparent and responsive to meet the needs of our families and the district. This software allows us to monitor, in real time, the number of active transfers, where families are in the transfer process, as well as create a direct line of communication to help inform our parents/guardians regarding all the steps of our transfer process. Q: When can Transfer Requests be submitted?
A: Transfer requests can be submitted from the first Monday in January after the winter break through the last day of the school year preceding the year for which the request is made. We offer 2 transfer request windows: January 5, 2026 - March 2, 2026, and April 13 - June 5, 2026. Please keep in mind that if you are applying to a potentially impacted school, enrollment may be restricted. Submission of an application does not guarantee admission. Impacted sites/grade levels may have limited capacity, and transfers may not be granted, or, if granted, may not take effect until after the school year begins.

Q: If I made a mistake on my Transfer Request Form, should I submit another one?
A: No, contact the Enrollment Center at 408-201-6030 or enrollment@mhusd.org and we can correct the information on your original request.

Q: Is there a priority for transfers with a sibling at the requested school?
A: Yes, we make every attempt to place siblings at the same school. However, placement of a sibling at one school does not guarantee subsequent placements for siblings during the current or future school years.

Q: If I already have a sibling at our requested school, are we guaranteed a transfer?
A: MHUSD strives to keep siblings at the same school whenever possible. Additional factors are considered when approving transfer requests. In addition to sibling placement, we also consider the capacity of special education programs, when applicable. While this factor is considered in approving transfer requests, it does not guarantee a transfer will be granted.

Q: How are decisions made regarding which transfers are approved?
A: There is no criteria to submit an application for transfer, and if there is space at the school site, you will be sent a conditional approval. By accepting the transfer, you are agreeing to the terms of the transfer contract. During the academic school year your child must:

Maintain 90% attendance (not including successful completion of independent study contracts). This does include all other absences excused or unexcused as outlined in the CA Department of Education.
Have no suspensions under Education Code 48900 or 48915 during the academic school year.
For secondary, they must have passed all their classes the current year or be on track to graduate with their 4-year graduation cohort.

If a seat becomes available for your student within the first three weeks of the school year, you will receive an approval email that includes the terms of the transfer contract. Once you accept the seat, you are agreeing to those terms, and your student’s transfer will be finalized. Please keep in mind that if you are applying to a potentially impacted school, enrollment may be restricted. Submission of an application does not guarantee admission. Impacted sites/grade levels may have limited capacity, and transfers may not be granted, or, if granted, may not take effect until after the school year begins.

Q: What if I am not meeting the Criteria of the transfer contract?
A: School sites will review transfer students' records (attendance, behavior, and grades) four (4) times a year, and if a student is not meeting the requirements, a support plan will be put in place. The student will be put on probation.

At the mid-year check-in, if a student is off track, the transfer meeting will need to be referred to the Multidisciplinary Team for review.
Students who meet the criteria for the year do not need to reapply for transfer the following years; the site now becomes their home school until the next matriculation. The student who does not meet the criteria will be notified of their status in each meeting, and if they are not meeting the criteria, will be given their final notice that they are not eligible to re-apply for transfer the following year.
Students whose home school is a DIME/DLI program (San Martin Gwinn and P. A. Walsh) will be given an option to return to one of the overflow sites for those programs.
If a school site does not meet with a transfer student or put a support plan in place at the end of the year, when the list for “renewals” goes out from enrollment, a student cannot be denied renewal.
Sites will have 2 choices:

a. Students will have met the criteria for transfer, and the site will become their home school.
b. Student may have not met the criteria but there were extenuating circumstances, and the site can put the student on a transfer contract.

Q: Can I appeal?

Q: What school will my child attend if I request a transfer and my child has an IEP?
A: The District will consider whether the school to which the parent seeks a transfer has the program identified in the student’s IEP and if said program has capacity. If the desired school offers the program set forth in the student’s IEP and capacity to enroll the student, the District will grant the transfer request. If the desired school does not have the program set forth in the Student’s IEP or does not have capacity in the program set forth in the Student’s IEP, the District will deny the request. There is no
guarantee that a student will be offered the desired school of attendance.

Q: What if my child becomes eligible for special education while on a transfer?
A: If your child is found eligible for special education while on an approved transfer request, the student will be offered the program at the school that offers the program the student requires to receive a FAPE and that has capacity. Q: Can I submit a Transfer Request before I enroll my child?
A: No, you must enroll your child at their school of residence before you submit a Transfer Request. Transfer Requests received for a student that has not completed the online enrollment and turned in all supporting documents to their school of residence will not be processed. Please keep in mind that if you are applying to a potentially impacted school, enrollment may be restricted. Submission of an application does not guarantee admission. Impacted sites/grade levels may have limited capacity, and transfers may not be granted, or, if granted, may not take effect until after the school year begins.

Q: How will I know if my transfer has been approved?
A: Enrollment will contact you via email to inform you when your transfer request has been approved. You can also view the approval on your profile through the Scribbles dashboard.

Q: Once my Transfer Request has been approved, how long does it last?
A: Once a transfer request is granted, the approved school becomes your “home” school through the highest grade at that school, as long as the student is in good standing as outlined in the transfer acceptance contract. There is no need to submit another request each year. However, if you want to return to your original school of residence or transfer to another school, you will need to complete a new transfer request form. It is not recommended that a student be moved repeatedly as it can have a negative effect on their academic achievement.

If you transfer from a K-8 school to a K-5 school you are not guaranteed to return to the K-8 school for 6th grade. A transfer request must be submitted to request a student be returned to the K-8 school. Approval will be determined by the capacity and available seats, as well as other criteria described above.

Q: Is there any benefit to submitting a Transfer Request Form early or does the district use a lottery?
A: MHUSD will use a lottery to allocate seats for all schools and grade levels. Please refer to the Lottery FAQ’s. A: Once a transfer is approved the parent/guardian has 7 days to decline the transfer. Students who would like to return to their school of residence after the 7 days must apply through the transfer request process.

Q: Does my transfer request expire?
A: Transfer requests are accepted beginning the first Thursday in January for the next school year. Transfers will continue to be accepted through the last day of school of the preceding year for which the request is being made. All pending transfer requests will expire within the first 3 weeks of school for the applicable year. Parents will be emailed by the end of the following week of school if the request cannot be granted.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of times I can change schools?

Una vez que recibamos la solicitud, le proporcionaremos el enlace a nuestra plataforma de solicitudes de transferencia, Scribbles, para que su hijo/a pueda participar en los sorteos de plazas que se realizan en primavera. Después de realizar los sorteos, le notificaremos si su solicitud ha sido aprobada, incluida en la lista de espera o denegada.

Si el padre o tutor no trabaja para el distrito escolar de MHUSD ni reside dentro de sus límites, deberá presentar una solicitud de transferencia interdistrital cada año para que su hijo sea considerado para el próximo año escolar. La aprobación previa no garantiza que se conceda la transferencia interdistrital para el nuevo año escolar y esta podría ser denegada si el estudiante no cumple con los criterios establecidos en el acuerdo de transferencia, que incluyen, entre otros, una asistencia y un comportamiento aceptables.

El estudiante debe mantener un 90% de asistencia (sin incluir la finalización exitosa de los contratos de estudio independiente). Esto incluye todas las demás ausencias, justificadas o injustificadas, según lo estipulado por el Departamento de Educación de California: ENLACE.
El estudiante no debe haber recibido ninguna suspensión según los Códigos de Educación 48900 o 48915 durante el presente año escolar.
En el caso de la educación secundaria, el estudiante debe haber aprobado todas sus clases durante el año en curso o estar en camino de graduarse con su promoción de cuatro años.

● Una “solicitud para el año en curso” es una solicitud de transferencia entre distritos recibida a partir de 15 días antes del inicio del año escolar. (Código de Educación § 46600.1(c)).
● Una “solicitud para el año siguiente” es una solicitud recibida hasta 15 días antes del inicio del año escolar. (Código de Educación § 46600.1(e)).
● Todas las solicitudes pendientes caducan después de las tres primeras semanas del año escolar para el que se presentó la solicitud. Se deberá presentar una nueva solicitud para cualquier año posterior.

P: ¿Cuándo comienza el distrito escolar de Morgan Hill (MHUSD) a aceptar solicitudes de traslado entre distritos para el próximo año escolar?
R: El plazo para solicitar traslados entre distritos se abre el primer lunes de enero, tanto para las solicitudes de entrada como de salida.

P: Mi hijo/a asiste actualmente a una escuela del distrito escolar de Morgan Hill (MHUSD), pero nos hemos mudado fuera de la zona. ¿Necesitamos solicitar un traslado interdistrital para que pueda permanecer en la misma escuela?
R: Lo más probable es que sí. Cada vez que cambie de domicilio, debe notificarlo al personal administrativo de la escuela actual. Ellos le informarán si necesita presentar una solicitud de traslado interdistrital para que su hijo/a pueda permanecer en esa escuela y le explicarán el proceso. Su hijo/a podrá seguir asistiendo a su escuela actual durante un máximo de 10 días mientras ambos distritos revisan su solicitud.

P: ¿Se da prioridad a alguna solicitud de transferencia entre distritos?
R: Según la política del distrito escolar de Morgan Hill (MHUSD), damos preferencia a los hermanos de estudiantes matriculados actualmente, a los hijos de empleados permanentes del MHUSD, a los hijos de padres que trabajan dentro de los límites del distrito y a los estudiantes que renuevan su transferencia interdistrital anterior. Puede haber otras circunstancias atenuantes, las cuales se revisan caso por caso.

P: ¿Por qué motivos se podría denegar mi solicitud?
R: Las solicitudes pueden denegarse si:
● La escuela o el programa solicitado ya no tiene cupo disponible.
● El estudiante tiene un historial de mala conducta o ausentismo, y/o malas calificaciones en la escuela secundaria.
● El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Morgan Hill (MHUSD) acepta las transferencias bajo la Ley Allen, para padres/tutores que trabajan físicamente dentro de los límites del distrito de MHUSD un mínimo de 10 horas semanales, solo durante los días escolares, o que son empleados permanentes de MHUSD. Una vez admitido en MHUSD, la transferencia del estudiante solo podrá ser revocada si el padre deja de trabajar dentro de los límites del distrito o para MHUSD.

P: ¿Puedo apelar una solicitud de transferencia denegada?
R: Sí, de acuerdo con el Código de Educación de California, sección 46601, puede apelar esta denegación ante la Junta de Educación del Condado dentro de los 30 días naturales posteriores a nuestra decisión. P: Si mi hijo/a asiste a la escuela mediante un traslado interdistrital, ¿podría este ser revocado o cancelado?
R: El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Morgan Hill (MHUSD) cree en la continuidad de la educación para todos los estudiantes. Si bien nos reservamos el derecho de revocar o cancelar una solicitud de traslado por bajo rendimiento académico, ausentismo o problemas de disciplina, intentamos mantener todos los traslados interdistritales durante todo el año escolar. Sin embargo, aquellos estudiantes que presenten bajo rendimiento académico, ausentismo o problemas de disciplina podrían ver su traslado cancelado o revocado a mitad de año.

P: Mi solicitud de traslado entre distritos escolares fue denegada. ¿Qué debo hacer ahora?
R: La educación obligatoria comienza a los 6 años de edad. Si su solicitud de traslado entre distritos escolares es denegada, debe asegurarse de que su hijo esté matriculado en la escuela que le corresponde según su domicilio si tiene entre 6 y 18 años.

Aunque tenga previsto apelar la decisión del distrito escolar actual o del nuevo distrito, su hijo debe estar matriculado y asistiendo a la escuela mientras se tramita y se resuelve su apelación ante la Junta de Educación del Condado de Santa Clara. Mantener a su hijo fuera de la escuela puede considerarse absentismo escolar, lo que podría acarrear sanciones y multas.

P: ¿Por qué el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Morgan Hill (MHUSD) puede aprobar o denegar una solicitud de transferencia interdistrital?
R: La transferencia puede ser revocada por cualquiera de los distritos en cualquier momento si la asistencia, el rendimiento académico o el comportamiento del estudiante no cumplen con las expectativas razonables de los funcionarios escolares. Además, las transferencias interdistritales pueden ser denegadas por falta de cupo.

Notificación entre distritos

Para las solicitudes de transferencia entre distritos recibidas 15 o menos días calendario antes del inicio de la instrucción en el año escolar para el cual se solicita la transferencia, MHUSD debe notificar a los padres de su decisión final dentro de los 30 días calendario posteriores a la recepción de la solicitud.

Para las solicitudes recibidas 16 o más días calendario antes del inicio del año escolar para el cual se solicita la transferencia, MHUSD debe notificar a los padres lo antes posible, pero no más tarde de 14 días calendario después del inicio de la instrucción en ese año escolar.

Si se rechaza una solicitud para la transferencia del año actual o futuro, MHUSD debe notificar a los padres, por escrito, de su derecho a apelar la denegación dentro de los 30 días calendario a la Junta de Educación del Condado de Santa Clara Opens in New Window.

Interdistrict Transfer Request FAQs

Q: Why would I need an Interdistrict Transfer?
A: If you reside within the attendance area of one school district and want your child to attend a school in a different district, you would need to complete an Interdistrict Transfer Request. *An exception will be granted for those whose parents work for MHUSD or work within the boundaries of MHUSD. These students fall into Allen Bill guidelines and details are provided below.

Q: I live in Morgan Hill, but I want my child to attend a school in another district. What should I do?
A: Submit an Interdistrict Transfer Request via the Transfer Information page on our website. Once you submit the form, the Enrollment Center will be notified. They will review the request and then either approve or deny your student's release. If your student has an IEP, our Director of Special Education will review the request and then either release or deny the request:
Once approved/released, we will inform you via email,l and your request/release will be forwarded to your requested school district. Your requested district will then either approve or deny your request and contact you with their decision. Both school districts must approve the request before the student can begin attending a new school.
If your request is denied by your residence school district, you will be notified, as well.

Q: (Allen Bill) Do I need to submit an interdistrict transfer request to attend a school in MHUSD if my student attended MHUSD for the 2025/2026 school year (renewal) and I work for or within the boundaries of MHUSD?
A: If your student meets the criteria above, he/she falls within the Allen Bill guidelines. In order for your student to be granted a seat at one of our schools for the upcoming school year, you will need to provide proof of employment:
For parents who work for MHUSD, a letter of continued employment for the 2026/2027 school year, signed by our HR department or an approved equivalent, must be submitted to us.
For parents who work within the boundaries of MHUSD (minimum of 10 hrs per week; school days only), a letter of continued employment for the 2026/2027 school year must be signed by your employer’s HR department or direct manager and submitted to us.
If the student attended a MHUSD school for the 2025/2026 school year and is matriculating to the next grade level (ie: 5th-6th; 8th-9th), they only need to request the transfer via Scribbles & upload proof of employment.
If the student has not previously attended a school in MHUSD but has a sibling in attendance in MHUSD, they will only need to request a transfer via Scribbles and upload proof of employment
If the student has not previously attended a school in MHUSD or does not have a sibling currently in attendance within MHUSD, they will need to request an interdistrict transfer from their district of residence and then be released to MHUSD. They will then need to request a transfer via Scribbles and upload proof of employment.

If you apply for an impacted school, we encourage you to also make a 2nd choice as transfer approvals to impacted school sites may not receive approval until up to the first 20 days of school.

*This may be different for students who Fall into specialized categories outlined in our policies such as, but not limited to: Mckinney Vento, Foster, or Allen Bill students

Q: I live outside of MHUSD attendance area and do not work within MHUSD boundaries but want my child to attend a MHUSD school, what do I do?
A: If your student falls into one of the categories below, contact the district in which you reside and request an Interdistrict Transfer:
If the student did not attend an MHUSD school for the 2025/2026 school year, or
If the student does not have a sibling currently in attendance within MHUSD
The interdistrict transfer request forms are managed online at most school districts, so search for the form on their website. Complete the form and submit it, either online or to their office, whatever their procedure. Once they release your child from their district, they will forward your request to the MHUSD Enrollment Center for review.
Once we receive the request, we will provide you with the link to our transfer request platform, Scribbles, so your student can be included in the lotteries in the Spring. Please refer to the Lottery FAQ’s for clarification on this process. After the lotteries have been run, we will then notify you as to whether your request has been approved, waitlisted, or denied.
If the parent does not work for MHUSD or within the boundaries of MHUSD, you must submit an Interdistrict Transfer Request every year in order for your student to be considered for the upcoming school year. Prior approval does not guarantee an interdistrict transfer will be granted for the new school year and may be denied if the student has not met criteria outlined in the transfer agreement which includes, but is not limited to, acceptable attendance and behavior:
○ Student must maintain 90% attendance (not including successful completion of independent study contracts). This does include all other absences excused or unexcused as outlined in the CA Department of Education: LINK.
○ Student must have no suspensions under Education Code 48900 or 48915 during the current school year.
○ For secondary, they must have passed all their classes the current year or be on track to graduate with their 4-year graduation cohort.
● A “current year request” is an interdistrict transfer request received starting 15 days before school begins for the school year. (Education Code § 46600.1(c).)
● A “future year request” is a request received up until 15 days before school begins for the school year. (Education Code § 46600.1(e).)
● All pending requests expire after the 1st three weeks of the school year for which the request has been submitted. A new request will need to be submitted for any subsequent year.

Q: When does MHUSD begin accepting Interdistrict Transfers for the next school year?
A: The interdistrict transfer request window opens the first Monday in January for both incoming and outgoing requests.
Q: My child currently attends a MHUSD school, but we’ve moved out of the area. Do we need to do an Interdistrict Transfer Request in order to remain at the current school?
A: Most likely, yes. Whenever you change addresses, you are required to alert your current school’s office staff. They will let you know if you need to submit an Interdistrict Transfer Request to stay at that school and will explain the process to you. Your student may continue to attend their current school for up to 10 days while your request is being reviewed by both districts.
Q: Are any priorities given to Interdistrict requests?
A: Per MHUSD policy we give preference to siblings of current students, children of permanent MHUSD employees, children of parents who work within the boundaries of MHUSD, and to students that are renewing their previous Interdistrict Transfer. There may be other extenuating circumstances, and those are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Q: On what grounds would my request be denied?
A: Requests may be denied if:
● The requested school/program is already at capacity.
● The student has a poor discipline or attendance record, and/or poor grades in secondary.
● MHUSD honors Allen Bill transfers, a parent/guardian who physically works within the boundaries of MHUSD for a minimum of 10 hours per week, school days only, or is a permanent employee of MHUSD. Once admitted to MHUSD, the student’s transfer may be revoked only if the parent ceases to be employed within the boundaries of the district or for MHUSD.

Q: Can I appeal a denied transfer?
A: Yes, according to California Ed Code 46601 you may appeal this denial to the County Board of Education within 30 calendar days of our decision. For further information on the appeals process visit the County Office of Education website at https://www.sccoe.org/supoffice/Pages/superintendent.aspx#interdistrict.
You can call (408) 453-6869 for the necessary documents to begin the appeals process.
If no appeal is made within 30 calendar days of the decision the district will deem your original request abandoned.

Q: If my child is attending school on an Interdistrict Transfer, would it ever be revoked or rescinded?
A: MHUSD believes in continuity of education for all students. While we maintain the right to revoke or rescind a transfer request based on poor attendance, academic performance, or discipline, we attempt to maintain all interdistrict transfers for the entire year. However, those who demonstrate poor attendance, academic performance, or discipline may have their transfer rescinded or revoked mid-year.

Q: My Interdistrict Transfer was denied. What do I do now?
A: Compulsory education begins at 6 years of age. If your interdistrict transfer request is denied, you must ensure your child is enrolled in their school of residence if they are between the ages of 6 and 18. Even if you plan to appeal the decision of the outgoing or incoming district, your child must be enrolled in and attending school while your appeal is scheduled and heard by the Santa Clara County Board of Education. Keeping your child out of school may result in your child being deemed truant, which may include penalties and fines.

Q: Why MHUSD May Approve or Deny an Interdistrict Transfer Request
A: The transfer may be withdrawn by either district any time the student’s attendance, achievement or behavior does not meet the reasonable expectations of school officials. In addition interdistrict transfers may be denied due to capacity.

Interdistrict Notification

For interdistrict transfer requests received 15 or fewer calendar days before the start of instruction in the school year for which the transfer is sought, MHUSD must notify parents of its final decision within 30 calendar days of receiving the request.

For requests received 16 or more calendar days before the start of the school year for which the transfer is sought, MHUSD must notify parents as soon as possible but not later than 14 calendar days after the start of instruction in that school year.

If a request for the current or future year transfer is denied, MHUSD must notify parents, in writing, of their right to appeal the denial within 30 calendar days to Santa Clara County Board of Education Opens in New Window.
