December 21, 2020

The Morgan Hill Unified School District will begin accepting online Transfer Requests for all grades* on Thursday, January 7, 2021. Transfer Requests are for parents/guardians who are interested in having their children attend a district school other than their school of residence. Students are placed in schools in the following order: School of Residence, Transfer Requests, and lastly, Interdistrict Transfers (those who live outside of MHUSD boundaries).

The MHUSD Transfer Request Form is an online form. The form and answers to frequently asked questions can be found on the MHUSD Enrollment Center website. The system will date and time stamp all transfer requests and parents will receive an email confirmation for their records. Once a parent has submitted the form, they will be given the option to complete another form to request an additional school, if desired. Up to three requests may be submitted. Students MUST be enrolled in their school of residence prior to the submission of a transfer request. Any request received prior to enrollment will be denied.

If requests for transfers exceed the capacity of any school or grade, transfer requests will be included in a lottery.  Information about the lottery can be found on the Enrollment Center website. Transfer Requests will continue to be accepted until June 4, 2021. All transfer requests will remain pending until the Enrollment Center confirms the approved transfer or informs parent/guardian of a denial for cause. Many factors are considered before granting a transfer request including but not limited to: siblings, employment with the district, attendance and discipline records. Pending transfer requests for 2021-2022 will expire on August 11, 2021. Any student who has not been approved for a transfer request by August 11, 2021 should attend their school of residence on the first day of school.

The District does not provide transportation outside of a school's established attendance area.  Parents/guardians are responsible for transportation to their new school of choice. Once a student enrolls in a school under this policy, he/she is deemed to be a permanent resident of that school and does not need to reapply each year. The transfer request will remain in effect through the highest grade at the school unless another transfer request is submitted and approved. A transfer request becomes null and void when a student leaves the district. Those who transfer from a K-8 academy to a K-5 school are not automatically granted a return to a K-8 academy for sixth grade as space is extremely limited. These students will matriculate to our traditional middle schools. A transfer request must be submitted and approved to return to a K-8 academy.

The District anticipates having a limited number of transfer spaces available for the 2021-2022 school year, and reserves the right to maintain appropriate balances among schools. Questions can be directed to the MHUSD Enrollment Department at 408-201-6030 or enrollment@mhusd.org

*Transitional Kindergarten transfers are only considered for students with a sibling already enrolled at the requested school.

DATE:    December 21, 2020

Outgoing Interdistrict Requests:

Morgan Hill Unified School District (MHUSD) will begin accepting Interdistrict Attendance Request/Permit Applications on Thursday January 7, 2021 from parents who live within the boundaries of MHUSD and wish for their student(s) to attend school in another district.  Application forms will be available on the MHUSD Enrollment Center website, in school offices and the District Office, and should be submitted to the district office for review.  Applicants must provide documentation to support the reason for the request. Please submit your completed and signed request, along with any required documentation, via email to enrollment@mhusd.org, or you can submit in person at the District Office. Applications will be date and time stamped as they are received at the District Office. Requests will be processed within 5 business days. Parents are responsible for transportation to their district of choice if the transfer is approved.

Incoming Interdistrict Requests:

Students living outside of the district wishing to attend school in the Morgan Hill Unified School District must first secure a release from their district of residence. Complete an Interdistrict Transfer Request form from your district. Once approved by your district, the form will be forwarded to MHUSD’s Enrollment Center. Requests will be reviewed by the Enrollment Center and parents will be notified by email with the status of their request. Processing of requests to attend school in MHUSD for the 2021-2022 school year will begin in May.

To continue (renew) enrollment in MHUSD:

  • Complete an Interdistrict Transfer Request form through your home district. Indicate that the request is a renewal.

  • Once the request is approved by your district, the form is sent to the MHUSD Enrollment Center for our review. You must have both approvals in order for your child to continue enrollment in MHUSD.

  • Facilities and special program capacity are considered for renewal approval. Current MHUSD residents cannot be displaced to allow a renewal for a student residing outside MHUSD.

  • Interdistrict transfer request for a student moving for the first time from elementary to middle school or middle to high school or requesting a new school is not a renewal. It is a new request and is subject to approval based on capacity at the requested school and grade level.

Incoming Interdistrict Transfer requests may be approved after the start of the school year to allow the district to ensure resident student placement before extending approvals to students outside of MHUSD. You should be prepared to have your student start at your school of residence.

The District anticipates having a limited number of enrollment spaces for interdistrict transfers for the 2021-2022 school year. Please submit your transfer request as soon as possible after the transfer window opens.

NOTE: ALL Incoming/Outgoing requests for interdistrict enrollment must be renewed each year and are subject to students maintaining good attendance, academics and discipline. Decisions may be appealed to the Santa Clara County Office of Education. See the MHUSD Enrollment Center website for more information.

Priority Enrollment for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten:

The safety of our students, families and staff is of the highest priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. While our Kinder Roundup event is the highlight of our enrollment season and offers a chance for new families to meet our amazing Principals and Kindergarten teachers, we have determined an in-person event is not in the best interest of the community at this time. We are still allowing priority enrollment to Kindergarten families which will begin on November 30, 2020. Any enrollment completed after December 11, 2020 will be considered open enrollment.

Frequently Asked Questions can be found on the Enrollment webpage. You can contact the Enrollment Center by phone at 408-201-6030 or by email at enrollment@mhusd.org.
