English Learner Services
Here in Morgan Hill Unified School District, we embrace the power to be multilingual!
Our English Learner students are supported in our classrooms in many different ways as they make their journey from learning English to fluency.
English Language Development Programs:
Structured English Immersion (SEI): All English Learner students are offered this program when they are identified as EL. This allows teachers to tailor instruction to allow for more language supports and to create spaces in their lessons where they can offer English Language Development at the student's level. With this targeted instruction, students will be able to make steady progress towards fluency.
English Language Mainstream (ELM): All English Learner students will transition to complete mainstream instruction when they reach a reasonable fluency level. Language supports in instruction will be offered as needed but students at this level may no longer be enrolled in ELD classes or placed in groups for ELD instruction. Students in this program are close to reclassification and/or are scoring highly on the annual ELPAC assessment. They will receive any additional supports needed to help them reclassify as fluent.
Dual Immersion Multicultural Education: Students enrolled in our DIME program at San Martin/Gwinn K-8 are taught primarily in Spanish in the early grade levels and reach 50/50 between Spanish and English instruction by fourth grade. They receive ELD instruction in English as well as any supports necessary to help them progress to fluency in both languages.
Reclassification
Reclassification is the exiting of a student from the English Learner program based on demonstration of complete fluency in English. Morgan Hill Unified has set criteria for this process, meaning, unless a student has met all criteria they will not be considered for reclassification. This is to ensure that we are not exiting them from programs or services that they would otherwise need in order to be successful in their class(es). To demonstrate fluency, a student will need to score at Level 4 for all three sections of the ELPAC assessment and meet or nearly meet grade level in two additional assessments. Activities are offered in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Somali, Haitian Creole and soon to be joined by Tagalog! These activities align to different in class standards and language practices and can be beneficial to your student's progress to fluency.
