Live Oak High School CTE

Yearbook (aka Intro to Journalism and Tech Writing) is a class at Live Oak where the students are involved in the complete process of planning, creating, and distributing the school yearbook, La Encina. Students get to learn about and build skills in graphic design, photography, print production, and sales. By the end of the year, all students in the class will have had a hand in the creation of that year's book, and ownership of its theme, coverage, and design. Multimedia and Video Production

Multimedia and Video Production:

Advanced Multimedia is a class at Live Oak where students learn the basics of video and film, from pre-production through post-production. Students get to build skills in directing, acting, videography, video editing, script writing, and marketing. Students have access to industry standard software and equipment for hands-on learning. This is the concentrator course for the Production and Managerial Arts pathway. The capstone course is Audio and Video Production. In this course, students run a school production, News from the Nuthouse, where they write, film and produce daily news and creative segments for the school to see. https://liveoak.mhusd.org/cte

Woodworking

Woodworking:

Woodworking 1 and 2 courses are designed to introduce students to skills, practices, tools, machines, millwork and cabinetmaking. All students are put through a rigorous safety program including examination, performance assessments, and tool certifications. The level 1 course focuses on basic hand and power tool applications with introductions to machine usage such as a table saw, bandsaw, routers, planer and drum sanders. Students have opportunities to build simple step stools, cutting boards, small cabinets, and progress into designing and building a project of their choosing.

Woodworking 2 students go into greater depth of skills and practices learned in the entry course, as well as enhance their tool and machine knowledge and safety with further advancements in their tool certifications, such as machine setup protocols.There is a greater focus on cabinet making with team competition builds, and opportunities to create a wide variety of projects as orders come in throughout the year.

Construction

Construction:

The Live Oak High School Construction program aims to introduce and connect students to the many career opportunities in the building trades and construction industry. Construction 1 is our entry level course that moves students through 20 different modules in all phases of a commercial or residential build such as pre-construction , structural construction, mechanical construction and finish construction. Modules include CAD, Introduction to engineering, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, wall and roof framing, masonry, tile, finish carpentry and more.

Construction Tech 2 is a continuation of the basic carpentry skills learned in Construction Tech 1. This class goes into greater depth on many carpentry skills including all aspects of framing, site surveying and site planning, blueprints, and concrete and masonry applications. The course also investigates carpentry careers as well as further investigations into other career opportunities in the construction trades. All students enrolled in Construction 2 will earn OSHA-10 Construction certifications, and will have opportunities for work-based learning, job shadowing, apprenticeships, and structured career planning. Students must have successfully passed Construction Tech 1 in order to enroll in Construction 2.

Foods & Culinary

Foods & Culinary:

Advanced Foods and Culinary are both courses in the Food Service and Hospitality CTE Pathway at Live Oak High School. The Advanced Foods class covers basics like measurement, culinary terminology, safety and sanitation, and foundational knife skills, as well as nutrition, cultural food traditions, and personal finance. There is no prerequisite needed before taking Advanced Foods, and students range from Freshmen to Seniors. Successful teamwork is a big part of this class. Each week the class groups make one (or more) dishes to practice their skills.

Culinary is for Juniors and Seniors who have already passed Advanced Foods. The expectation is that they remember how to do the basics covered in Foods and are ready for more challenging projects. Students all get a Food Handlers Certificate to demonstrate their understanding of food safety and sanitation. This class teaches more about the Culinary industry, and is articulated with the Mission College (Junior College in Santa Clara) Hospitality Program.

Agricultural Education

Agriculture Education:

There are three CTE Pathways in the Agriculture and Natural Resources sector at Live Oak High School: Agriscience, Agricultural Business, and Plant Science. All three of these pathways start with Ag Biology as the introductory course and Soil Chem as the concentrator course. The main difference is in the capstone courses. The capstone course for Agriscience is Vet Science, the capstone course for Agricultural Business is Ag Sales and Service, and the capstone courses for Plant Science is Art and History of Floral Design or Horticulture. Art and History of Floral Design

Art and History of Floral Design:

Art and History of Floral Design is a course in the Plant Science CTE Pathway at Live Oak High School. Students in the class become proficient in making and creating arrangements. They are taught the design that goes into floral arrangements as well as the background of how the industry works and marketable skills to make them more employable. Students’ arrangements are sold through subscription service. The money that they make selling their work is used as a budget for their next project.

Veterinary Science is a course in the Agriculture Science CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. Veterinary Science courses impart information about the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of animals, typically emphasizing domestic and farm animals. Course topics focus on anatomy and physiology, nutrition, behavior, and reproduction, sanitation, and use of veterinary supplies and equipment. Agriculture Sales and Service (also known as Agriculture Leadership) is a course in the Agricultural Business CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. This course teaches students different service and sales techniques, leadership, public speaking, and employability skills. Agriculture Sales and Service is open to all 10th - 12th grade students and is designed for student leaders within the FFA Organization or students interested in being more involved in FFA.

Agriculture Mechanics:

Agriculture Mechanics is a course in the Agriculture Mechanics CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. This course provides theory and hands-on experiences that provide opportunities for students to develop basic knowledge and skills in agricultural mechanics. Instructional areas include the basic fundamentals of maintaining and repairing small gasoline engines, basic electricity, welding, construction, cold metal work, and operating agricultural equipment safely. Agriculture Mechanics is a first time course open to all students at any level.

Drama 1 CP is a course in the Performing Arts CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. Advanced Drama:

Advanced Drama is a course in the Performing Arts CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. If you are considering a career in film, television, theatre, or acting, this class will provide you with the advancing skills to perform in those industries. Some of the topics covered are character development, musical theatre, theatre history, and audition and performance techniques. Advanced Drama is geared towards 10th-12th grade students who have passed Drama 1.

Stagecraft 1:

Stagecraft 1 is a course in the Production and Managerial Arts CTE Pathway at Sobrato High School. Students will work on sets, lighting, costumes, makeup, and sound. Stagecraft 1 is an introductory CTE course and is open to all students at any grade level.
