Assembly Bill/Senate Bill 130
Assembly Bill/Senate Bill 130 requires school districts to offer Independent Study for the 2021-2022 school year if it meets your family’s needs.
We are updating our plans for educational options for the 2021-22 school year. To meet the needs of our families, the district will offer an Independent Study option in addition to full-time, in-person learning:
K-5 Independent Study: The district’s K-5 Independent Study option will be offered in conjunction with Calvert Education. The program will include:
Daily live synchronous instruction in core subjects using Zoom video conferencing
Students will remain enrolled in their regular school but their assigned teacher of record will be a non-MHUSD teacher who is contracted with Edmentum
Class sizes may range depending on enrollment
If a parent enrolled their child in the Independent Study option and chooses to have their child return to in-person instruction, the parent must notify the Enrollment Department to make the request. We will enroll students as quickly as possible, wherever space is available. Note: Space may not be available at the student’s currently assigned school due to in-person student enrollment and staffing availability.
6-12 Independent Study: Morgan Hill Unified teachers will provide synchronous and live interaction sessions for students using Zoom. Edmentum UC a-g approved digital curriculum will be used for most subjects.
The same in person daily attendance, expectations and work productivity requirements still apply.
For staffing purposes, please let us know your commitment ASAP (by Jul 30) for the 2021-2022 Independent Study program.*If you completed the Independent Enrollment Form (formerly named the Virtual Academy) in late June/early July, you DO NOT need to complete this form.
Complete this Independent Study Enrollment Form or contact the district enrollment office to enroll in the described Independent Study. (Enrollment Office: 408-201-6030)
Independent Study enrollment forms are due by Friday, July 30, 2021
If a parent enrolled their child in the Independent Study option and chooses to have their child return to in-person instruction, the parent must notify the Enrollment Department to make the request. We will enroll students as quickly as possible, wherever space is available. Note: Space may not be available at the student’s original school or the student may not have their 1st choice classes.
Parents with a child with an individualized educational program (IEP) may request a time to meet with the IEP team to discuss if the Independent Study option is an appropriate placement.
The Dual Immersion Multicultural Education (DIME) program will not have an Independent Study option and will only be offered in person at San Martin/Gwinn.
For questions regarding the Independent Study option, contact the Educational Services Department: 408-201-6070.
Currently, we have fewer than 100 families that have selected the Independent Study option (named “Virtual Academy” in a previous communication). If interested, please complete this Independent Study Enrollment form by Friday, July 30, 2021.
