Central Coast Section Update

Today, Superintendent Betando received the following email from the CCS Commissioner, David Grissom.

Dear CCS Superintendents, Principals and Athletic Directors,

I hope that you and your families are well.  As we are starting to gear up for the school year, I wanted to give you a few updates and key dates that are on the horizon.

Pre-Participation Physical Examination Form- As you are aware, CIF Bylaw 503.G, which requires an annual pre-participation examination for every student-athlete prior to athletic competition, now includes the opportunity for a 30-day waiver of that requirement, upon request, by the student’s parent to the school administration.  The CIF State Office has posted the necessary forms to request that waiver on their website (attached here).

CCS Office Hours-Please note that the Central Coast Section Office is open Monday-Thursday from 8am-2pm and closed on Friday for the month of July.  Starting on August 1, we will return to normal office hours of 8am-4pm.  While we are open, we are asking for normal business to be operated through the phone or email for the safety of all.  Due to the pandemic, we will not be allowing any walk-in’s until further notice.  Visitors to our office must arrange for an appointment in advance and are required to wear a mask upon entering the building.

NFHS Network Offer-The NFHS network is offering two Pixellot units to all member schools in the Section (one for the stadium and one in the gymnasium) at this time.  These Pixellots (cameras) would allow for parents, students and staff to watch games at home over the NFHS Network.  When sports do return to our sites, the ability to have spectators to attend is uncertain at this time and this may be an offer that your schools would want to look at more thoroughly. You can get more information about the offer by clicking here.  A press release for this offer is attached to this email.

Announcement on Fall, Winter and Spring Sports for 2020-2021-We are continuing to monitor the ever-changing situation involved with COVID-19 pandemic in preparation for the CIF announcement regarding the status of Fall, Winter and Spring sports for he 2020-2021 school year on July 20.  As this date approaches, I want you to be aware of how this information will be disseminated to you.  The CIF State Office will announce the dates of CIF Regional and CIF State Championships for each sport on July 20.  The Central Coast Section Executive Committee will be meeting on July 21 to discuss the dates and the direction of the CCS for the 2020-2021 school year.  It is my belief that we will be releasing specific sports calendars, which will include dates of first interscholastic competition, Sit-Out Period dates for each sport, end of regular season dates, section playoff dates and Central Coast Section Championship Finals.

It is very evident to me that the clear and consistent message from all of our stakeholders is a desire to deliver Fall, Winter and Spring sports this upcoming school year.  For that to happen, it will require vision, creativity, flexibility and teamwork from all involved to make this a reality.  It is my sincerest hope that we are all ready to embrace the challenges that we are headed toward.  The Central Coast Section office is here to support all of our member schools.  If you need any type of support, please fell free to reach out to us.

Sincerely,

Dave Grissom
CCS Commissioner
