Student Board Member Roles and Responsibilities

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS

Student Board Member(s) shall have the right to attend all Board meetings except closed (executive) sessions. (Education Code 35012)

Closed Session Purposes and Agendas

All materials presented to Board members, except those related to closed sessions, shall be presented to Student Board Members at the same time they are presented to voting Board members. Student Board Member(s) shall also be invited to attend staff briefings or be provided with a separate staff briefing within the same timeframe as the briefing of other Board members. (Education Code 35012)

Agenda/Meeting Materials

Student Board Member(s) shall be recognized at Board meetings as full member(s), shall be seated with other members of the Board, and shall be allowed to participate in questioning witnesses and discussing issues. (Education Code 35012)

Student Board Member(s) shall be allowed to cast preferential votes on all matters except those subject to closed session discussion. Preferential voting means a formal expression of opinion that is recorded in the minutes and cast before the official vote of the Board. Preferential votes shall not affect the final numerical outcome of a vote. (Education Code 35012)

Minutes and Recordings

Student Board Member(s) may make motions that may be acted upon by the Board, except on matters dealing with employer-employee relations pursuant to Government Code 3540-3549.3. (Education Code 35012)

A Student Board Member shall not be liable for any acts of the Board. (Education Code 35012) (cf. 9323.2 - Actions by the Board)

Student Board Member(s) shall be entitled to be reimbursed for mileage to the same extent as other members of the Board but shall not receive compensation for attendance at Board meetings. (Education Code 35012)

Student Board Member Development

The Superintendent or designee may, at district expense, provide learning opportunities to Student Board Members through trainings, workshops, and conferences, such as those offered by the California School Boards Association and other organizations, to enhance their knowledge, understanding, and performance of their Board responsibilities.

Board Training

The Superintendent or designee may periodically provide an orientation for Student Board member candidates to give them an understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of Board service.

 

MORGAN HILL UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION

APPLICATION FOR STUDENT BOARD MEMBER

 

The Morgan Hill Unified School District and Board of Education are looking for one (1) Student Board Member and one (1) alternate Student Board Member to serve during the 2022-2023 school year.

ELIGIBILITY

Any high school senior in good standing (Class of 2023) attending Live Oak High School,  Ann Sobrato High School or Central High School enrolled in the Morgan Hill Unified School District during the 2022-2023 school year may apply.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Completed applications must be received/submitted by Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at 5:00pm.

APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Complete and submit an MHUSD Student Board Member Application (paper version OR electronic version) by August 30th at 5:00 PM.
2. Candidates will be notified no later than September 1, 2022.
3. A high school wide election will be held on September 8th - 15th. More information to follow.
4. The Student Board Member Representative will be seated at the September 20th board meeting.

TIMELINE

  • Call for Student Board Member announcement: August 16th
  • Applications due August 30th at 5:00 PM
  • Qualified candidates will be notified by September 1st
  • Collect candidate statement and campaign video due by September 6th at 5:00 PM
  • Election via Google Form: September 8th - 15th
  • Contact and announce winners (student BOE/alternate): September 16th
  • Student Board Member meet with Superintendent: September 19th at 4:00 PM
  • Student Board Member seated on September 20th at 6:00 PM

Electronic version: This is the e-version of the application, and it will allow students to submit their attachments electronically. NOTE: Students will need to sign into their district google account to submit their attachments below.

Paper version: All paper applications must be emailed as one packet (Student Information sheet plus the copy of the student transcript, letter of recommendation, and written response) to schrieferk@mhusd.org

VOTING

All high school students in MHUSD attending Central High School, Live Oak High School, and Ann Sobrato High School will have the opportunity to vote once finalists are selected in accordance with procedures prescribed by the Board. (Education Code 35012)

TERM OF OFFICE

The term of Student Board Member shall be one academic school year. This year, the term will commence in September and run through the first board meeting in June of 2023.

BOARD MEETING SCHEDULE
